Tyra Banks' Plastic Surgery Revelation Comes With An Important Message About Beauty

"Fix it or flaunt it — I think women should be able to do both."

Tyra Banks is getting honest about her history with plastic surgery, but it's about more than gossip. The America's Next Top Model creator also has an important message about beauty, and how we judge women who choose to alter the way they look.

In her new memoir, Perfect Is Boring, Banks reveals that she had a nose job early in her career, explaining, "I had bones in my nose that were growing and itching. I could breathe fine, but I added cosmetic surgery. I admit it! Fake hair, and I did my nose. I feel I have a responsibility to tell the truth."

Banks elaborated on her plastic surgery opinions with People magazine. "Natural beauty is unfair," she said. "I get really uncomfortable when women who are these natural beauties judge anybody who does anything to themselves."

The same goes for makeup and other beauty practices. "If you like your natural self, don't worry about it," she told the magazine. "But if you feel insecure about something … I have a magic bag of beauty tricks to make you who you want to be. Permanent or temporary, I do not judge that."

Ultimately, Banks' thoughts on beauty come down to the importance of personal choice — and the knowledge that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. "Fix it or flaunt it — I think women should be able to do both," she shared. "There is a boundary line, either you're super natural or you live at the plastic surgeon. It's okay to hop back and forth over that line. You want a hair weave? Fine. You want permanent eyebrows? Fine. We as women need to stop judging."

That also means allowing women to embrace their natural beauty if that's what makes them feel confident. Over the years, Banks has used Top Model to share the message that there is more than one way to be beautiful. That includes giving plus-size models an opportunity, and, more recently, removing the age limit to compete. Banks herself has long celebrated her "big forehead," and shared how it helped her stand out as a supermodel.

Banks' new book is subtitled 10 Things My Crazy, Fierce Mama Taught Me About Beauty, Booty, and Being a Boss, and was co-authored with her mother, Carolyn London. It's out April 3.
