A New Study Shows That Drinking Wine Can Help You Live Longer

Bottoms up! (In moderation, of course.)

Cheers to a new study that says drinking two glasses of wine or two bottles of beer every day could increase your chance of living past 90 by 18 percent. 

Presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science this February, the 90+ Study at the UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders has analyzed over 1,600 of "the oldest-old, the fastest growing age group in the United States" since 2003. 


Over that time, researchers have uncovered a few major findings about longevity. The first (and one we're most excited about tbh) is that the study participants who drank "moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained." 

During her presentation, neurologist and head of the study, Dr. Claudia Kawas, said, "I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity."

In other words ... bottoms up! (In moderation, of course.)

In addition to a few glasses of wine or beer, fitting 15-45 minutes of exercise into each day could help you add more years to your life, according to Dr. Kawas. Her study found that decreased a person's risk of premature death by 11 percent. So while the notion that physical exercise promotes healthy longevity certainly isn't new, it's nonetheless important to consider in between sips of your favorite pinot. 

And if you're in need of something to do while imbibing, the study suggests taking up a hobby that engages your mind for at least two hours a day, as this appears to cut down the risk of premature death by 21 percent. For example, putting together a puzzle or filling out a crossword are two brain-boosting activities you can do without having to put down your glass.
