Selena Gomez Shares Her Vacation Footage And Why She's Done With Society's Expectations

Her message caught Amy Schumer's attention, too.

We think it's safe to say Selena Gomez has had it with society's unrealistic beauty standards — and rightfully so.

On Tuesday March 20, the singer took to Instagram to share a message about body positivity shortly after paparazzi released photographs of her vacation with friends in Sydney, Australia. The photos show scars from her kidney transplant, and were met with comments from trolls trying to body-shame Gomez, calling her "thick" or pregnant, Elle magazine reports

But rather than let these comments bring her down, Gomez released her own video to Instagram with a message everyone should read.

The lighthearted video, set to Alvvays' dreamy tune, "Dreams Tonite," was accompanied by Gomez's weighted caption: "The beauty myth — an obsession with physical perfection that traps [a] modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."

The video made an impact on Amy Schumer, who shared a screenshot of it to her own Instagram feed.

"I love this post. Thank you [Selena Gomez]," Schumer captions on her post. "One month from today our movie [I Feel Pretty] comes out and it is all about this. Our movie is about how we all struggle with self-esteem. It's not a tale of a homely fat [woman] finding her worth. It's about a person who struggles with feeling invisible and not good enough. I am inspired by Selena and my friends and women every day daring to just feel good. No striving for another version of yourself. Let's love ourselves today. Just how we are."

We love that women like Gomez and Schumer are using their platforms to empower other women to feel good about themselves, and we hope it encourages others — both in and out of the spotlight — to do the same.
