Samantha Bee Doesn't Want Us To Forget About Puerto Rico. Here's How You Can Help.

"Let’s make America give a damn about Puerto Rico."

Samantha Bee doesn't want the United States to forget that Puerto Rico is still in need of assistance months after Hurricane Maria hit the island last September. To help remind the public of the ongoing crisis, Bee aired an hour-long Full Frontal special Wednesday night, which was filmed in Puerto Rico and takes a firsthand look at the current situation.

As Bee points out in "The Great American Puerto Rico," there are still more than 100,000 Puerto Ricans without power. Last month, while filming the special, the show tweeted about a power outage Bee and her crew experienced at their hotel in San Juan.

"Despite all the hard work Puerto Ricans have put into their own recovery effort, this is still the longest blackout in U.S. history," Bee says in the special.

The show highlights volunteers working to restore power, as well as how people are coping with a lack of electricity — including "laundry parties," where those without power gather to wash their clothes on a bus. Bee also looks at the potential for solar power, even helping to have solar panels installed at a local barber shop.

"If this happened in Connecticut, it would be front page news every day," Bee said of the crisis, according to Deadline. She apparently told her crew of the trip, "Let's make America give a damn about Puerto Rico."

The show also shared a simple way for people at home to do their part for the U.S. territory — by buying T-shirts. The shirt, which was designed and printed in Puerto Rico, reads "Frontal Entero," or "Full Frontal" in Spanish.

You can buy the shirt in the TBS online shop. All proceeds will go to the Hispanic Federation to help with rebuilding efforts. Viewers are also encouraged to "bring your T-shirt production needs here and support the Puerto Rican economy."

You can see more clips from the Full Frontal special on the show's YouTube channel.
