A New Bookstore Will Open Soon, But It’s Who’s On The Shelves That Makes It Worth A Visit

Coinciding with an important holiday in March.

International Women's Day is about to get more literary with the help of a special bookstore.


Penguin Random House's UK division is opening a pop-up bookstore featuring only women authors to celebrate female writers through the decades. The bookstore, called Like A Woman, will be open from March 5-9 in Shoreditch, located in East London, according to the Evening Standard.

Since International Women's Day is on the March 8, the store plans on having a series of events focusing on female leaders from the magazine, podcast, and literary worlds. Proceeds from the events will go to Solace Women's Aid, a charity that offers shelter and supports domestic violence survivors in London.

For those who just want to browse and shop for new reads, Penguin Random House has teamed up with British book retailer Waterstones in order to group books by "the impact the author has had on culture, history, or society," according to The GuardianWith over 200 writers to choose from, categories range from "Essential feminist reads" to "Inspiring young readers."

In addition to "celebrat[ing] the persistence of women who've fought for change" according to a statement from Penguin, its creative manager, Zainab Juma, also stressed the importance of highlighting female writers.

"Women's voices being heard and taken seriously is key to achieving gender equality, and with The Like A Woman Bookshop we're making room for those voices to be elevated and celebrated," Juma said in a statement. "We're creating a space where readers can look to incredible writers, activists and pioneers for the inspiration to go forward and make change like a woman."
