Francia Raisa On Donating Her Kidney To Selena Gomez And The Scars She's Learned To Love

"My scars tell my story."

Last year, Francia Raisa, donated her kidney to Selena Gomez, who was battling lupus

"My kidneys were just done," Gomez told the TODAY show. "That was it and I didn't want to ask a single person in my life. "And she [Raisa] volunteered and did it." The transplant, Gomez says, saved her life.

Now, in a video for Selfmagazine, Raisa's sharing more of their story, including how she learned that she was Gomez's kidney match, how the pair worked through recovery, and the lessons she's learned along the way.

"My scars do not define me," Raisa begins in the video. "My scars tell my story. And so I really appreciate these scars, 'cause they honestly changed my life. Not just because of Selena, just [for] me personally, life came into perspective. I learned a lot."

Raisa then talks about deciding to donate her kidney and learning that the donation and recovery process would be difficult. But she and Gomez worked through it together and now her scars make her feel "special" and "different."

Additionally, Raisa talks about her tattoos, including one behind her neck, and the ways that she keeps her body healthy, pointing to yoga.

"Just having that namaste moment is very important. I dance ... I took my first class since surgery on Friday," she explains, adding that it was hard to give up exercise and asking others for help through her surgery.

"This last year has been the craziest of my life. I went through huge changes," Raisa continues. "But honestly, I don't think I would have been able to handle it as well had I not gone through the storms in my life. And I say 'storms' because think about the weather: what happens when a storm is over? There's a rainbow. And the sun comes out. And everything's great. So storms suck, but it's helped me appreciate my next journey and my next chapter in life. You've gotta keep moving forward. You don't have time to look back."
