Man Surprises Brother With Kidney Donation After Finding Out They're A Perfect Match

"Not only was it the right thing to do, but the only thing to do."

On Brandon Lash's 24th birthday, his little brother, Derek, presented him with a rather large card filled with an even bigger surprise.

Brandon and Derek's mother, Beth Lash, shared a Facebook video on Dec. 25, 2017 capturing the moment when Brandon read his card out loud.

"I have always looked up to you," Brandon reads from the front of the card, written by his brother.

"I love spending time with you ... I'm so thankful I have you for my brother. You have always been there for me, even though I get on your nerves sometimes. You will always have a piece of my heart," Brandon continues, opening up the card.

"And now you will have my kidney, too. We are a perfect match," Brandon says, dropping the card to the floor and breaking down into tears.

According to a Jan. 9 TODAY report,  Brandon has kidney disease and "is currently in chronic renal failure and has extremely low kidney function. He receives dialysis treatments three times a week, and was told in April 2015 that he had been recommended for the transplant list." Unfortunately, his parents are not a match, but luckily, his brother is.

"I can't believe Derek would sacrifice going through all this for me," Brandon tells the publication. "He's giving me a chance to have a healthy life again ... it's overwhelming and I still can't believe it's happening."

"I hated seeing him sick and knew something needed to be done to make him healthy again," Derek adds. "Not only was it the right thing to do, but the only thing to do. He's my brother ... We didn't know how long he could be on the transplant list, and I knew I just wanted my healthy brother back."

Their transplant is set for mid-January.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, there are over 100 thousand people awaiting kidney transplants in the United States as of January 2016. Someone else is added to that list every 14 minutes. There are plenty of ways you can become a donor, and help others in need.
