Fashion Rule Breakers

Our Favorite Fashion Designers, Brands, Models, And Icons Who Broke Rules And Boundaries In 2017

Who were your favorite fashion rule breakers of 2017, and what fashion rules will you break next year?

Fashion rules were made to be broken, and 2017 was the best year (yet) to do it. Each month, A Plus profiled a fashion designer, model, organization, or icon who we consider to be a fashion rule breaker — someone who acts outside mainstream industry standards to make a positive difference.

This year was chock-full of fashion rule breakers, but some of their stories were so powerful, we'll be remembering them well into 2018 and beyond. They include two models, Dru Presta and Weah Bangura, who broke down fashion stereotypes, a photographer who promoted male body positivity, and a designer who dressed "little activists" in the making.

Not only did they make amazing strides this year, but so did Corban Addison, attorney, activist, and author advocating better worker rights for those in the textile industry. Additionally, Kirsten Dickerson created lifestyle brand Raven + Lily to work with more than 1,500 at-risk women in 10 countries to help provide them with fair trade wages, access to healthcare, and more. While these stories prove how far the fashion industry has come, they are just the tip of the iceberg creating a positive change in various facets of the industry.
